Yes -- the holding pattern persisted

I was unable to get my private vessel permit changed to enter Glacier Bay at the same time as Matt so I was forced into more holding pattern. We tried to make good use of it. We rafted at Pleasant Island the 15th and Matt and company left to enter the bay. I decided to go an anchor in the Expedition Arm and wait it out. We found a public float that was free next to the Ocean Beauty Cannery and joined a couple of other boats there. Very nice people.

The cannery is closed. There are 3 people there maintaining the place, keeping the generators running and the bears at bay. There is a museum that was open and it was very interesting with the history of the cannery and the area, but the ice cream store was closed.

We were very anxious to get into Glacier Bay but this was a nice diversion.

The next morning we discovered that our milk supplies were low and we thought it would be nice to have water prior to entering glacier bay. Since we had an extra day we headed over to Hoonah. I noticed it was only a 2 hour drive so we were off. The city was nearly a ghost town with two giant cruise ship docks that sat empty.

We were assigned a side tie in the inner harbor with no power or water but it was cheap and we needed something to do.

The good news is that there was a local Starbucks.

We walked the town and did shopping. We bought every bit of 2% and 1% milk in the store (all eight of them) and put them into the fridge. We were aware that there would be 9 people in Glacier bay and the morning beverages would be in high demand.

We stopped into a souvenir shop and had a chat with the attendant who was apparently native Alaskan and he told us the place to cruise to see bears and whales. We paid careful attention and put together a plan for the next day of sightseeing.
